The Bay State

the steamship authority offers rides to martha's vineyard, as well as nantucket.

i've always wanted to go to martha's vineyard but i cannot remember why. however, going there makes you realize why thousands of us citizens spend the summer months on the island that lies south of cape cod in the bay state, massachusetts. martha's vineyard can only be reached by ship or air. so right after our short newport stay (find the pictures here) we drove to woods hole where the ferry to martha's vineyard departs.

classic: soft-drink-slurping on board!
we had a clear view on this day.
the ferry ride from woods hole to martha's vineyard takes about 45 minutes and costs $8 (one-way).
ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem - under the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty. that's the motto of massachusetts.
let's travel to the end of the world together.
you can either go to vineyard haven, like we did, or oak bluffs. both towns are located on martha's vineyard. if you are wise, you choose oak bluffs!
consider vineyard haven to be a one-horse town... as you can see.
the vineyard gazette. when i grow up (no, i am not grown up already!) i want to have a weekend cottage in a small new england town by the sea. <3
still went to vineyard haven? no problem! just take the bus to oak bluffs. it's worth the bus ride, believe me.
oak bluffs - the epitome of summer peacefulness.
they have ducks...
... and lots of other birdies.
the city is in full bloom.
a pavilion. they should build more such things in austria.
'you can't cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water.' rabindranath tagore.
more flowers.
finding stillness.
happy-go-lucky me.
cruising downtown.
henry's ford.
this is what the bay looks like during sunset. i wish we could have stayed longer...
snapping pictures.
what a brilliant idea!
leaving oak bluffs.
at the end of the day relationships matter most.
the sunken sun.

The Ocean State

a typical newport home.

we started our new england road trip in newport, rhode island. when you look at the pictures you will soon understand why rhode island's nickname is 'the ocean state'. even though we only spent about 3 hours in newport, this city has left a mark in my memory. the sun was shinging bright and the atmosphere was so different from new york's hustle. so far newport is the most beautiful provincial town i've seen in the states. what's more, newport is home to eleven breathtaking mansions which are open to the public. because our time was so limited we went for the most famous one - the breakers mansion. as rhode island was (and still is) known to be new england's summer resort the vanderbilt family built the most stunning summer residence in newport at the end of the 19th century. the interior also blew me away. unfortunately, we were not allowed to take any pictures inside the mansion. anyway, have fun scrolling down!

flowers everywhere.
