Indian Dish #1

i've been a vegetarian for almost 2 years now and ever since i stopped eating meat and fish, i've been more creative when it comes to cooking. especially indian cuisine offers many vegetarian dishes using different spices and vegetables. yesterday i tried my first indian dish and it turned out quite well. so i thought i'd share the recipe with you.

potatoes with curry and poppy seeds*:

750 g potatoes
3 jalapeno peppers
fresh ginger (4 cm)
5 tablespoons white poppy seeds
5 tablespoons mustard oil
1 1/2 teaspoons curcuma powder
1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
1/4 teaspoon chili powder

tomato and cucumber salad*:

1 cucumber
as much tomatoes as you want
1 onion
300 g yoghurt
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1 tablespoon oil
salt, pepper

*ingredients for about 3 people

wash, peel and cut the potatoes into pieces. wash and cut the fresh jalapeno peppers (just a tip: use gloves! i didn't and washing your hands with soap a multiple times afterwards doesn't help. it hurt a lot when i took out my contact lenses...). peel and grate the ginger. you can use a mortar for the poppy seeds but it didn't really work when i tried it. roast potatoes for 5 minutes in mustard oil. add jalapeno peppers, ginger, curcuma powder, paprika and chili powder. roast for 3 minutes (turn down the heat!). add one cup of water and cook for 5 minutes (turn up the heat). add white poppy seeds and cook for 10 minutes (low heat). as a side dish i used rice. for the salad: wash and cut the vegetables and mix with yoghurt, cumin powder, oil, salt and pepper.

enjoy your meal!

xoxo, S
